Electrifying your home is a large undertaking. Not only will it take a fair amount of planning and time, but the upfront costs of upgrading can be significant. Luckily, there are resources available to help make the transition more affordable. 

Utilities, local governments, the State of Minnesota, and the federal government all offer financial incentives for electrification projects. Use the list below to find incentives available to you.

Free, Personalized Electrification Advice

Residents of Electrify Everything communities can call or email the Electrify Everything Advisors for free, no-pressure guidance on their electrification projects. Your advisor can help you stack incentives to maximize your savings, find you trusted contractors who are experienced in electric technologies, and answer your questions about electrification and weatherization.

Statewide, City, and Neighborhood Loans

Center for Energy and Environment (CEE), the program manager for Electrify Everything Minnesota, works with Minnesota Housing, local governments, and neighborhood associations to provide flexible loans for home improvement and energy efficiency projects. If electrification is in your plans, consider combining the many resources available from the state, your utility, and your local government to make the most of the savings and financial opportunities available to you. 

City Programs

Many Electrify Everything Minnesota member Cities offer programs to help residents transition their homes to be partially or fully electric. Each City offers different programs for electrifying single-family homes, including rebates, which are included in the calculator above. Other programs, including those for income-qualified households or multi-family homes may be available, too. For more information on rebates, use the calculator. State of Minnesota Assistance Programs

The Energy Assistance Program (EAP) is a statewide program to help income-qualified households pay for home heating costs and furnace repairs. The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) provides free home energy upgrades to income-qualified households to help homeowners and renters save energy and ensure their homes are healthy and safe. 

Xcel Energy’s Electric Space Heating Rate

If you electrify your home’s heating and are an Xcel Energy customer, you can sign up for a special rate, which will help lower your utility costs while heating using electricity during colder months. If your primary heating source is electric and you'd like this rate, call Xcel Energy, tell them about your electric heating system, and ask to enroll in the electric space heating rate program

CenterPoint Energy’s Homeowner Efficiency Redo Opportunity (HERO) Program

This program offers qualifying homeowners a free energy review and pays at least 50% of the cost for qualifying installed weatherization and energy efficiency upgrades. Households must be at or below 80% of the area Median Income (AMI). To learn more, visit the HERO program website.

CenterPoint Energy’s Low-Income Rental Efficiency (LIRE) Program

If you’re an income-qualified CenterPoint Energy customer or the owner of a building with at least 50% income-qualified occupancy, you may be eligible for a free energy review and financial assistance in making weatherization upgrades to improve efficiency. Visit the program website for more information on qualifying and to apply. 

Rochester Public Utilities' (RPU) and Minnesota Energy Resources' Income-Qualified Programs

Rochester Public Utilities and Minnesota Energy Resources offer programs for income-qualified households. The 4U2 program and Energy Sustainability for Our Elderly programs offer weatherization, appliance repair and replacement, and other energy efficiency upgrades to qualifying customers who have electricity service from RPU and gas service from MERC.
